Standing in the middle of the town it dominates, it was once a royal palace, witness to the birth of the first king of France and Navarre. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1840, and its majestic grounds are classified as a \"Remarkable Garden\".
\n
Although the first mention of the castle dates back to the 12th century, the first fortification of the castle is thought to have been built in the 10th century and then added to over the years by the rulers of the Viscounty of Bearn. Its biggest transformation came when Gaston Fébus decided to strengthen Béarn's sovereignty by transforming the castle into an impregnable fortress. It was during these extensions that the three walls were built, reinforcing the building to this day.
\n
Bernadotte Museum
\n
Immerse yourself in the story of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, a native of Pau who became King of Norway and Sweden after a long and impressive military career. As you move through the rooms, you will discover 18th-century Béarn during the French Revolution, then immerse yourself in the Napoleonic era, when Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was still his comrade-in-arms, before discovering how he became Marshal of the Empire.
\n
Paintings, sculptures, objects and other artistic compositions trace his extraordinary career.
\n
Every year in autumn, the museum puts on a Scandinavian show, featuring Swedish and Norwegian artists.
\n
Lescar Museum
\n
This is a museum dedicated to discovering the archaeological heritage of Lescar, near Pau. These remains, dating from the Neolithic era to Antiquity, are the mark of the cultural richness of Béarn. Bronze jewellery, vases, a mosaic and other objects from the Iron and Bronze Ages can all be found here.
\n
The museum is located in the cellars of the former bishop's palace, opposite Notre-Dame Cathedral. The museum is open in July and August, but can be visited the rest of the year on request.
\n
Museum of Resistance and Deportation
\n
Created by former Resistance fighters, the museum's aim is to preserve the memory of the Second World War across the years and generations. This important place exhibits a collection of objects from those difficult years.
\n
Founded in 1992, the museum has always been run by former members of the Resistance or former deportees, and today it is run by enthusiasts who continue to help as many people as possible discover this period.
","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Museum of Fine Arts This museum is recognized as one of the finest in New Aquitaine, thanks in particular to the variety and quality of the works it contains.
